Abuja at 50: FCT Minister Praises FCDA’s Executive Secretary, Staff on Project Delivery

“Leadership is key. When you have the right leadership, you get the result you want.

Having been appointed as the Acting Executive Secretary of FCDA, I can see that you align yourself with the aims and with the vision of the present administration. You are up and doing. Because you are up and doing, see the results we have achieved today.

 So, I commend you, and it would not have been possible if those who are working with you are not giving you the cooperation”

Those were the words of the FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike on Wednesday during a meeting with members of FCDA’s Executive Management Committee (EMC) and other top officials of the Administration in his office.

 The Minister noted that his remarks about the Executive Secretary was hinged on his exemplary leadership, enthusiasm and commitment at achieving results when it comes to infrastructure delivery.

In a remark, the Executive Secretary, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda  appreciated the current FCT Administration, particularly the Minister for the unprecedented achievements recorded within the short period of two years out of the 50 years of Abuja’s existence.

 The Executive Secretary said, “The level of achievements recorded within the last two years in infrastructural development of the FCT is unprecedented in the 50-year history of the FCT and the FCDA. This is as a result of the commitment, dedication and proactive drive of the leadership of the current FCT Administration under the leadership of the Honourable Minister, Mr Project, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON.”

The FCDA helmsman revealed that at the inception of the current FCT Administration, about 25 projects were inherited, completed, and commissioned; 7 major projects were initiated and completed in addition to about 135 roads that were resurfaced in the various Districts of the Phase 1 of the City. He added that about 30 others were initiated by the Administration and are at various stages of completion.

He recalled that in August 1975, the then Military Government of General Murtala Muhammad set up the Justice Akinola Aguda Committee on the suitability and continuation of Lagos as the Capital City or the relocation of the Capital City to a new location based on some terms of reference.

He said on the recommendation of the Committee, the Capital Territory (FCT) Decree No 6 of 1976 (effective 4th February) was promulgated, establishing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with an area of 8000 square kilometres and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), respectively.

The FCDA according to him, was charged with the responsibility of planning, development, and administration of Nigeria’s new Federal Capital City, Abuja, and the Territory as a whole.
