The Executive Secretary, FCDA, Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda has assured the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) of the Authority’s readiness to continue to support its development of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Project in the FCT, a project aimed at improving access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and proper hygiene practices, particularly in rural communities of the Territory.
He disclosed that a major focus of the Federal Capital Territory Administration in the next financial year would be providing safe water to the Satellite towns, adding that the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barr Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, is very committed to this plan, as seen in the 2025 project.
The Executive Secretary who gave the assurance when a team from UNICEF paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday, described the WASH project in the FCT as an interesting one,saying that in the midst a sprawling Capital City, there are many local communities that would require their services. “We assure you that we will give you our support. Our Planners cover every inch of the FCT. Whatever information you need about planning, we will give you. We also have our technical team. Whatever support you need, we will provide “, he told his visitors.
Speaking earlier, the Chief of WASH, UNICEF Nigeria, Jane Bevan, said they came to express appreciation to the FCDA for the support given to UNICEF on the WASH Projectso far, as her organisation had worked with FCDA and the FCT Rural Water Supply And Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) to develop a WASH project in the FCT, which she said would be supported by the China Exim bank.
She said this partnership would help UNICEF deliver integrated healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene services for vulnerable children and families’ health facilities, schools, markets, and communities in the FCT. To this extent, she said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed between UNICEF and China Exim Bank in Beijing, China, recently,and that work on the project would begin in June 2025.
